ADHD Causes are Subject to Debate; A Natural Cure Isn’t!
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is often seen in children as young as preschool age, when their first classroom and social interaction provide the proper environment for ADHD symptoms to become noticeable.
While there is little debate over the symptoms of ADHD in children or adults, there is really no one cause that is universally agreed upon. Much of the focus on potential ADHD causes seems to center on genetics and brain function.
ADHD Causes: Genetics
One of the more compelling arguments for heredity as a cause of ADHD involves looking at identical twins. If one identical twin is diagnosed with ADHD, there is a 92% chance that the other identical twin will be diagnosed as well.
ADHD also tends to run in families without identical twins, leading researchers to believe that a genetic link certainly exists.
ADHD Causes: Brain Chemicals
Another cause of ADHD might be a chemical imbalance in the brain. Levels of dopamine, a neurotransmitter (chemicals that carry signals between nerves) that controls learning, mood and attention, are lower in those diagnosed with ADHD.
ADHD Causes: Brain Injury
Diagnosis of a previously unknown ADHD condition often follows a traumatic head injury. This injury may have occurred before, during (the birth process) or after birth, particularly if the injury caused damage to the frontal lobes. There also seems to be a direct correlation between the severity of the brain injury and the extent of the ADHD symptoms (i.e., there are far worse ADHD symptoms with a severe brain injury).
ADHD Causes: Environment
Mothers who smoke or who abuse alcohol or drugs while pregnant have far greater odds of having a child with ADHD. Nicotine can cause loss of oxygen to a developing fetal brain.
Early exposure to toxins, such lead paint, is believed to be another contributor to ADHD in children.
ADHD Causes: Pregnancy and Birth Complications
ADHD may be more common in babies 1) who experienced oxygen deprivation while their mothers were pregnant, 2) whose mothers experienced difficult pregnancies, or 3) who were born with low birth weight (> 3.3 lbs).
ADHD Causes: Nutrition
Several studies on children have shown that those who are lacking in essential fatty acids (Omega-3) are more likely to be hyperactive and to exhibit other types of behavioral disorders. Low levels of fatty acids have also been tied to dyslexia, depression, memory problems, allergies, arthritis, weight gain, eczema and a host of other conditions, including tendencies toward violent behavior.
One way to increase the amount of Omega 3 fatty acids is by eating fish and supplementing your diet with flax seed oil to improve brain and nerve functioning. Much has been written about this because our diets tend to be high in trans fats and saturated oils, as opposed to highly concentrated unsaturated fats. This problem alone has all sorts of consequences on the brain – especially the still-developing brains of children.
There have been many studies on the impact of food additives and food colorings/dyes on behavior, with mixed results. Because people react to foods differently, some additives may have an effect on children and adults with ADHD, while others are not affected at all (See related article, ADHD Treatments: Beyond Ritalin and Other Risky Drug Solutions).
Treating the Cause of ADHD, Naturally
As you can see, much of the focus on the causes of ADHD centers on the brain. The sponsors of ChooseNatural.com are health care professionals who don’t treat ADHD; instead they attempt to locate the cause of ADHD and correct it so that ADHD symptoms can clear up on their own.
How are they able to do this? They are chiropractors who are specifically trained to locate and eliminate spinal misalignments that can cause nerve dysfunction. In the case of ADHD, this nerve dysfunction usually occurs in the brain stem, which is located at the base of the brain and the very top of the spine. Every nerve in the body passes through the brain stem on its way down through the spinal cord and out to all areas of the body.
What’s interesting is that the manufacturer of Ritalin, one of the primary drugs used to treat ADHD, admits that the drug affects the brain stem. Chiropractic takes a giant leap, however, and looks to eliminate the cause of ADHD symptoms; Ritalin just keeps the symptoms “in check” for periods of time.
What would you rather have, elimination of the cause of ADHD symptoms, or a “band aid” solution that allows your child to function normally for a few hours at a time, until it’s needed again to relieve the symptoms of ADHD?
The answer would appear to be obvious…
The Cause of ADHD Can Be Eliminated with Chiropractic Care
The sponsors of ChooseNatural.com are specially trained in Chiropractic College to locate and correct spinal misalignments that can cause nerve dysfunction and result in conditions such as ADHD.
Because brain stem function appears to be compromised in children and adults with ADHD, a chiropractor would look for spinal misalignments specifically in the upper cervical spine, the first few vertebrae at the top of the spine.
If you’re wondering what causes spinal misalignments, that’s easy to answer. They’re usually the result of some type of trauma to the head or neck area, such as a fall, an accident, a sports injury, or even the birth process itself.
If the upper cervical spine is misaligned, as is usually the case with ADHD, correcting the misalignment in that area frees up the nerves and resolves the brain stem dysfunction. The body is then free to function optimally, without any interference, and the symptoms of ADHD often resolve themselves, so medication is no longer needed!

Our sponsors are caring and compassionate health care providers who believe in the ability of your body to heal on its own when the nervous system is in proper working condition.
If the spark plugs in your car don’t fire properly, your car doesn’t move. It’s the same with your body; if your nervous system is compromised in some way, your nerves can’t “fire” correctly either and your body can’t work properly. Chiropractic care fixes that by locating the cause of nervous system dysfunction and correcting it.
