Asthma Medications: Are The Benefits Really Worth the Risks?

Woman with asthma inhaler image
Asthma medications may help to prevent asthma attacks, but at what cost? Have you ever really read the list of potentially dangerous side effects?

Asthma is a worldwide epidemic and its numbers are rising at an alarming rate, especially among children, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). There is no known cure for asthma, and standard treatment consists of a combination of long-term daily asthma medication and asthma inhalers, also called “rescue” medication for acute asthma attacks.

Because the incidence of asthma continues to grow globally, with no end in sight, more and more parents are forced to deal with the frightening reality of watching their children gasp for air, coughing and wheezing, as panic sets in for both parent and child.

And while asthma medications (and there are hundreds of them) control the symptoms of asthma, their long lists of short-term and long-term side effects are enough to cause nightmares and turn many parents into insomniacs, listening for an asthma attack or in fear of potentially lethal side effects.

Hard choices and even harder decisions. To medicate or not to medicate – tough decision when medication addresses only symptoms and not underlying causes. Why isn’t there a better alternative? There is… read on.

Asthma Medications Control Asthma Symptoms – Nothing More, Sometimes Less

There is no cure for asthma. It is a chronic, life-long illness that can be controlled at best, with daily asthma medication and “rescue” inhalers for asthma attacks that can be severe and life threatening.

The mainstay daily medications are all about control and prevention and, unfortunately, they aren’t even very good at that because acute asthma attacks continue to occur even when children and adults are taking their asthma medications as prescribed. And, this is precisely the reason why pharmaceutical companies also manufacture inhalers. When daily medications fail to prevent an asthma attack, an asthma inhaler can quickly come to the rescue to get breathing back under control.

And yet, new asthma medications, with fancy names and high-priced claims, are constantly entering the marketplace so that it now appears there are more medications to treat asthma than there are allergens that can cause allergic asthma!

To compound matters further, asthma medications differ, both in dosing requirements and in type, depending on whether you are a child, a pregnant woman, a senior with heart disease, a patient who has another chronic illness or one who takes specific medications for any other conditions. And, since asthma symptoms may change, both in type and severity over time, you need to work closely with your doctor to monitor your condition (or your child’s) to be aware if changes in your medication or dosing become necessary.

Then there are the notorious side effects of asthma medications. Most have a Patient Information Sheet that you could use to wallpaper a small room with a little under a year’s worth of refills.

But seriously – drug manufacturers are required, by law, to print out any and all precautions, side effects, and potential drug interactions and contraindications for a reason. Asthma medications have potentially lethal side effects that the FDA has recognized, prompting the inclusion of strict warnings in patient literature to alert consumers about specific, life- threatening or dangerous risks associated with the use of asthma medications.

Asthma Medications – As a Parent, or an Asthma Sufferer, What Choice Do You Really Have?

Choices image
Asthma medications and their accompanying literature leave many asthma sufferers and parents wondering “What choice do I really have in terms of my own or my child’s asthma – severe asthma attack vs. potentially devastating side effects?” It’s like playing a game of Russian Roulette with very high stakes!

Believe it or not, you do have a choice, because it’s not simply a decision to medicate or not to medicate; there is another option, an option without side effects, an option with an impressive success rate, an option that the sponsors of ChooseNatural.com want you to know about!

Our sponsors are chiropractors who believe that causes, not just symptoms, of diseases need to be addressed. And, you don’t start to address causes with lots of medications that have serious side effects, especially when you are dealing with children. Using two and three medications to control the symptoms of asthma, when you could be looking to address the underlying cause, is just not something that our sponsors believe in.

So how do they approach asthma treatment?

The Chiropractic Approach to Asthma Looks For Causes

Chiropractors believe that most illness starts with a defect in the central nervous system. We live our lives through the vast network of nerves that exit from the spine to every part of our body, relaying vital information from the body to the brain and from the brain to the body.

Think about touching a hot stove. What do you do? You pull your hand away of course. Why? Because the hand has sent a sensation of pain through the nerves to the brain and the brain responds to the hand to back off. This happens so quickly that you never even realize that this communication has taken place!

What happens when a nerve is compromised in some way, for example, if a bone is sitting on it, is like having a “kink” in the cord. Communication becomes flawed and the body part affected by the nerve interference suffers in some way as a result.

How does a nerve become compromised? Well, it usually happens because of a spinal misalignment that occurs when a baby, child or adult falls, or has an accident or injures a part of the spine. The very first misalignment can actually occur during the birth process when intense pressure pushes on a very delicate neck and spine.

So, our sponsors are chiropractors who have been trained to detect areas of spinal misalignment and adjust those areas to free the affected nerves so the body can heal itself, without medications that merely mask symptoms!

And, since most people have had some type of accident, injury or fall early in their lives, perhaps even numerous times, that’s a lot of opportunities for spines to become misaligned, producing nerve malfunction and severe distortion in brain-body communication.

Asthma Medication vs. Natural, Effective Chiropractic Care

After all, this is what he or she deals with on a daily basis, people just like you who are seeking help for illnesses and conditions, help that doesn’t come in the form of a pill or scalpel.

There are thousands of former asthma sufferers who will attest to the fact that chiropractic works and has helped their bodies to heal! After a chiropractor removes any interference to the nervous system, your body or your child’s body is fully capable of healing itself. And, many asthma symptoms are either entirely relieved or they become far less severe.

Don’t you think it’s worthwhile to investigate a safe, natural, drug-free approach to asthma symptoms that locates and corrects their cause? Wouldn’t it be great to find out that you aren’t forced to choose between two potentially risky options?

Please call one of our sponsors and schedule an appointment for an evaluation for yourself or your child. We believe that you and your child will finally be able to breathe normally, for the first time in years.

Thank God for Chiropractic Care: A Parent Testimonial Provided By One of Our Sponsors

No parent should have to live like that – waiting for the other shoe to drop. But, that was how I lived until I found Dr. Carrie, and then my baby’s whole world changed and so did mine.Matthew had a difficult entry into this world. I was in labor for 32 hours and he just wasn’t coming, and despite being placed on a Pitocin drip to try to push my labor along, nothing happened. We were at a standstill.

Finally, my obstetrician said we needed to do a C-section. I found out from Dr. Carrie that there is a higher incidence of asthma in babies delivered by C-section, especially emergency C-section, perhaps because they don’t get some of the mother’s immunity from the bacteria present in the birth canal. Or maybe it’s because the baby experiences some type of respiratory distress, no one really knows for sure.

Well, early on, Matthew had colic, era infections, frequent colds and upper respiratory infections, and…he was diagnosed with childhood asthma by a hospital emergency room pediatrician, after a frightening asthma attack that took both of us by surprise. I ended up calling for emergency assistance because I was afraid he was choking. He couldn’t breathe and the look in his eyes was one of sheer panic – the same panic I felt because I didn’t know at the time what was happening.

Matthew was put on nebulizer treatments that were supposed to control his asthma symptoms, but he had several severe attacks after the first one and it got so I was afraid to fall asleep at night for fear that he would have an attack. I even moved his crib into my room so he was close by me.

Thankfully, another mother in our play group also had a baby with severe asthma. She told me that she was taking her daughter to see a chiropractor, Dr. Carrie, and that maybe I should call her. Her daughter was finally healthy, with no asthma symptoms, and all in her home were finally sleeping well at night!

I was skeptical to say the least. I mean really, a chiropractor for a baby? But, my curiosity actually got the better of me, that and the fear that one day, I wouldn’t be there when Matthew had an attack.

Dr. Carrie agreed to see me right away. At our first visit, she asked me many different questions about my pregnancy and Matthew’s birth. Then she used a special testing device that showed a diagram with colored bars that matched up to specific areas of Matthew’s spine. They showed he had some rather extensive nerve interference in his upper spine.

When I brought him back to see Dr. Carrie two days later, she told me she believed that she could help him. Matthew received his first adjustment that very day and he slept like a baby as soon as we got home, right through to the next morning.

We returned for his second adjustament a few days later, and I started to notice a decrease in his symptoms. After several more adjustments, I decided to stop the nebulizer treatments to see what would happen. I knew I was taking a chance, but “nothing ventured, nothing gained” and the nebulizer wasn’t working anyway.

Well…that was the beginning of peace and calm in my home. Matthew is now two years old and is doing so much better. With regular chiropractic adjustments, he is happy, healthy and full of life. No more asthma, no more colds, and no more ear infections! No more costly asthma medications, no more sleepless nights and no more trips to the emergency room.

I just can’t believe what chiropractic has done for my baby and for me! I just wish that others would discover this amazing type of care!

It’s a mother’s dream come true to have a healthy and normal two year old who can run around all day without stopping, even to catch a breath!

Thank you Dr. Carrie – you made a believer out of me!
