Carpal Tunnel Symptoms & Treatment

What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

It is compression of the median nerve at the wrist as it passes through a tunnel formed by the wrist bones (carpal tunnel) and ligaments.

What are the symptoms of carpal tunnel?

Numbness, tingling, and pain affecting the thumb, index finger, and middle finger. If the palm is involved it usually suggests the problem is at least partly higher up in the arm. It is very common to have the same nerve also get pinched or irritated at the elbow by overly tight muscles on the front of the forearm.

What treatment is available?

Chiropractic and Active Release Techniques have a very good track record treating carpal tunnel. Braces and stretches that tip the wrist backwards can also help. Massaging the wrist and muscles of the forearm/elbow often relieve symptoms.

Be careful using supplements for carpal tunnel. Vitamin B6 has plenty of research showing it can help at 100IU per day, but doses over 200IU per day can overload the liver and become toxic.

Surgery should be a last resort and only considered after tests have confirmed that the problem is in fact at the carpal tunnel and not somewhere else in the arm or even in the neck.
