Causes of Headaches

When it comes to looking at the causes of headaches, research scientists have identified so many that it’s sometimes like “finding a needle in a haystack” to identify what’s causing yours!

Often, your doctor will suggest that you keep a journal to try to identify “triggers” that might set those headache pain wheels in motion. Their thinking is that if you avoid those triggers, you’ll remain headache-free. That may not always be the case and medications that you take for headache pain can even cause what’s known as “rebound” headaches – headaches that are actually caused by the medication you use to relieve headache pain!

If you’re really looking to discover the one cause of most headache pain, then you need to read on!

The Most Common Headache Causes

Different types of headaches are caused by different sets of triggers. While there may be a distinct list of causes for tension headaches, cluster headaches, migraines and sinus headaches, there are some common causes that could apply to all headache types. These include:

  • Eyestrain – most often caused by excessive reading or computer use
  • Diet – certain food allergies or reactions can trigger headaches
  • Stress or tension that causes muscles to tighten
  • Lack of adequate sleep, too much sleep or inconsistent sleep patterns
  • Dehydration – you need to be drinking ½ of your body weight in ounces of water every day to remain properly hydrated (150 lbs. = 75 ounces of water)
  • Ear, teeth and sinus infections – dry or congested sinuses, ear pain and teeth pain

Sometimes it’s really hard to pinpoint the exact cause of one headache episode, but if you suffer from chronic headaches, certain recurring triggers are usually to blame.

Treating Headaches

The traditional medical model uses drugs, both over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription, to treat the symptoms of all types of headaches. Sometimes a doctor will recommend non-drug treatments as well, such as quitting smoking, modifications in diet, hot/cold compresses, electrical nerve stimulation, biofeedback, relaxation techniques, cognitive/behavioral therapy and aerobic exercise.

Some sufferers get headache relief from other alternative types of therapy such as massage therapy, herbal treatments, Reiki, acupuncture, acupressure, homeopathy and meditation. But the alternative therapy that patients turn to most often, with the highest success rate, is chiropractic care.

Traditional Headache Treatment Falls Short

With so many different types of headaches, think of how difficult it must be for your doctor to arrive at a correct diagnosis in the first place. Add to that the number of OTC and prescription medications available to treat so many types of headaches and… well, you get the picture.

And what are these treatments geared toward? They address either headache preventive treatment (such as in the case of migraines) or headache relief treatment for pain symptoms after pain is already present. Neither of these approaches addresses the cause of your headache symptoms in the first place.

But… chiropractic care does!

Why Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractors don’t merely treat symptoms, instead they look for causes. Many people have been taught to be skeptical of chiropractors because they really don’t understand what we do.

Chiropractors are dedicated health care professionals who require licensure to practice. They are recognized as practitioners by state and federal governments and by many insurance companies as well.

The sponsors of are caring and compassionate chiropractors who want to help you get to the cause of your headaches. They ask you plenty of questions and provide you with a thorough examination and health history to understand the physical and emotional symptoms you experience as a result of your headaches. They sit with you to decide whether you are a good candidate for chiropractic care, and then develop a treatment plan that can address and eliminate the cause of your headaches, without drugs!

How can they eliminate your headache symptoms without drugs? Chiropractors are trained to use gentle and safe spinal adjustment techniques that can relieve any nerve interference that is causing your headaches – no matter what type of headache you have. Relieve the cause – relieve the symptoms, it’s just that simple.

But How Does It Work?

Believe it or not, headaches are a very common reason why patients visit a chiropractor. You see, chiropractors believe that most illnesses and conditions are caused by some type of interference in the central nervous system. This interference occurs when a bone in your neck or upper spine is out of place or misaligned. Locating and correcting these misalignments naturally is exactly what chiropractors do!

Bones often shift out of place when you trip or fall or you’re involved in some type of accident or injury that causes trauma to your head or neck. It may have even happened back when you were just a baby. Because no one ever addressed this misalignment, your nervous system “acted up” by causing your headaches.

But our sponsors can change all that! Chiropractic care has helped millions of people to gain relief from headaches that once kept them from enjoying so many things in life. And… you too can join their ranks by choosing to call one of our sponsors today.
