Causes of Migraine Headaches

You go out to dinner every Saturday night and love nothing more than a nice chocolate dessert – the more chocolate the better! And every Sunday morning, you wake up with a pounding migraine, wondering what causes this to happen each week. Is it stress over going back to work on Monday? Is it due to the medications you’re taking? Just what could it be?

The cause of migraine headaches are generally believed to be irregular levels of certain brain chemicals (serotonin and dopamine) that cause blood vessels to behave differently. In addition, spasms in the main arteries that lead to the brain cause fluctuations in blood flow, which cause pain. Perfect ingredients for a migraine, along with triggers that get the process rolling.

Common Triggers that Cause Migraine Headaches

There is a distinct list of triggers that cause migraine headaches; these triggers differ somewhat from those that might cause tension headaches, cluster headaches, or even sinus headaches.

Common triggers that cause migraines include:

  • Food – there are many, but several include wheat, oranges, chocolate, caffeine in coffee and colas, alcohol (red wine, brandy, whiskey), pickled foods, smoked foods, eggs, nitrates (hot dogs, salami), aspartame (artificial sweetener), processed meats and aged cheese
  • Sunlight, sun glare, flickering lights, fluorescent lights
  • Strong smells, including perfumes and cleaning supplies
  • Smoking or exposure to cigarette or cigar smoke
  • Changes in hormone levels that occur during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and menopause or while using hormone replacement therapy or birth control pills
  • Stress – especially after you have experienced a stressful event; excitement that produces an adrenaline rush
  • Changes in eating habits (fasting, dieting, skipping meals, eating earlier or later than usual) or sleeping habits (sleeping too much, too little, weekend sleep)
  • Motion sickness from air or auto travel
  • Excessive physical activity/overexertion
  • Overuse (abuse) of pain remedies that may cause “rebound” headaches

You may be advised to keep a journal to track your migraine symptoms and the events that led up to each in order to identify common triggers that might be causes of your migraine headaches.

Treating Migraine Causes, Not Symptoms

Most doctors advocate the use of over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription drugs to treat the symptoms of most types of headaches. Of course, if your migraine is related to certain triggers, a doctor might also recommend quitting smoking, changes to your diet, relaxation techniques, or a regular sleep schedule, for instance.

Some people also obtain migraine relief from alternative therapies, such as massage, herbs, acupuncture, meditation, homeopathy and meditation. But chiropractic care is the alternative therapy that many patients turn to for relief – and often permanent resolution – of their migraine symptoms.

How Does Chiropractic Care Help?

Most medical and non-medical treatments for migraines are geared toward headache prevention or headache relief. Neither of these treatments addresses the real cause of your migraine headaches – but chiropractic does!

Chiropractors are trained to look for the causes of disease, not to treat symptoms. They are well-trained and educated health care professionals who require licensure to practice and are recognized by state and federal governments as well as by many insurance companies.

The sponsors of are chiropractors who want to help you get well by identifying the underlying cause of your migraine headaches. They obtain a comprehensive health history and provide you with a full examination to learn about your individual experiences with migraine headaches. Then you both decide if you are a good candidate for chiropractic care that can eliminate the cause of your migraine headaches, without migraine medications! Chiropractors use all-natural spinal adjustment techniques to relieve nerve interference that may be the cause of your migraines. Once they relieve the cause, the symptoms can become less frequent and severe or they can be eliminated entirely!

But How?

Chiropractors believe that disease is the result of interference in the central nervous system. This interference occurs when a bone in your spine shifts out of place or becomes misaligned. Chiropractors are trained to locate and correct these misalignments without drugs and without surgery.

Bones can move out of place for a number of reasons. Sometimes when you fall or you’re involved in an accident or are injured in some way, you experience trauma to your head or neck. Maybe you fell as a toddler learning to walk. When you had no immediate symptoms, no one worried about the fall. But if a misalignment occurred back then, and you never addressed it, that misalignment can be the cause your migraine headaches today.

But the sponsors of can change that! Millions of people around the world have experienced relief from headaches through chiropractic care, headaches that kept them from enjoying life – just like yours do. It’s easy to join their ranks – just contact one of our sponsors today.

Because your body isn’t the same as anyone else’s body, we can’t predict or guarantee outcomes. What we can tell you is this – chiropractic care is the most sought-after health care alternative – and it didn’t get there without showing some pretty impressive results!

Our sponsors can show you testimonials from patients who now know true relief from all types of headaches, including migraines. Allow chiropractic care to help you heal your body, not just treat your symptoms. Please call one of our sponsors who is conveniently located near your home or office and experience migraine headache relief you never thought was possible.
