Chronic Headaches

Chronic headache image

While many people have an occasional headache now and then, chronic headaches occur far more often; some people even have them every day.

Chronic headaches are defined as “headaches that occur more than 15 days a month for more than three months.” Believe it or not, it is estimated that chronic headaches affect 4% – 5% of the worldwide population! Also known as chronic daily headaches, these headaches affect twice as many women as men.

So much pain that’s so unnecessary…

Chronic Headache Types

Diagnosing any type of headache involves looking at the location and severity of the pain, headache frequency and any additional symptoms that might be present, such as light sensitivity, nausea, etc.

There are four different types of chronic headaches:

  • Chronic tension headaches often develop after starting out as episodic tension headaches. Symptoms include mild to moderate pain on both sides of the head that feels like a tightening sensation. Nausea and sensitivity to light might also be present. (See related article, Tension Headaches Are Common; A Natural Solution Can Change That!)
  • Chronic migraine headaches usually begin as episodic migraines without an aura. Chronic migraine symptoms include severe throbbing pain that usually affects only one side of the head. Nausea/vomiting and light/sound sensitivity might also be present. (See related article, Migraine Headaches: All-Natural Care Can Relieve Chronic Pain)
  • Daily, persistent headaches usually start without warning and occur every day. Pain occurs on both sides of the head and mild nausea and/or light and sound sensitivity can accompany the pain.
  • Hemicrania continua headaches are characterized by continuous moderate pain on one side of the face. Other symptoms include runny nose, nasal congestion, droopy eyelid and red teary eye on same side of the head as the pain. The symptoms of this type of headache include characteristics of tension headaches, migraine headaches and cluster headaches.

Chronic Headache Causes

Chronic headaches are associated with a number of risk factors that include:

  • Headache medication overuse/abuse – overuse of over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription headache pain relief medications, in terms of recommended dosage and length of time taking the medication, can cause what are known as “rebound” headaches. This risk factor alone is responsible for 80% of all chronic headaches.
  • Being overweight/obesity
  • Stress, anxiety and depression
  • Sleep disturbances, i.e., difficulty falling or staying asleep, snoring
  • Caffeine overuse – can also cause rebound headaches
  • Infections (i.e., meningitis), illnesses, brain abnormalities (i.e., tumors, inflammation of blood vessels), pinched nerves

Chronic Headache Treatment

Medical doctors generally treat chronic headache symptoms with medications, such as beta-blockers, antidepressants, anti-seizure medications and non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Other recommendations include identifying all risk factors outlined above and engaging in alternative therapies, such as meditation, relaxation exercises, yoga and chiropractic care.

Chronic Headache Relief, Naturally!

Many people who have found relief from their chronic headache symptoms exclaim, “I wish I had discovered chiropractic care years ago!” That’s because chiropractic is the most popular health care alternative for people who have chronic headaches. “If only more people knew what chiropractic was really all about, ” muses a busy chiropractor in Melbourne.

A listing of Perth, WA chiropractors who would like to help.

Why? Because chiropractic care is not a treatment at all! It doesn’t dull pain like headache medications do; instead it goes to the cause of headache pain, providing a long-term solution for headache relief that goes beyond the time a patient is actually under care. No medication can claim that – and the notion of taking medication to counteract a condition caused by medication overuse is simply absurd!

Chiropractic care works because it doesn’t just treat symptoms – treating symptoms “takes the edge off” and chronic headaches return after the medication has worn off or you stop taking it. Chiropractic care, on the other hand, identifies the cause of your chronic headaches and helps your body to heal on its own, without drugs!

Choose Chiropractic for Chronic Headache Relief

Did you know that headache relief is one of the main reasons why people go to chiropractors? Want to know why chiropractic care is so effective? It’s because chiropractors aren’t interested in symptom relief; they’re interested in cause relief. Deal with the cause and the symptoms will go away. And… study after study shows that chiropractic care is effective for all types of headaches.

How do chiropractors provide headache relief care when they don’t prescribe any medications? Chiropractors are trained to locate and correct misalignments in the spine. Out-of-place bones cause nerve interference which causes your body to malfunction, resulting in dis-ease.

When a spinal bone is out of place, even just a bit, it can press on nerves – causing interference with vital communication transfer between the brain and the body.

Spinal misalignments often result from head trauma that often occurs when you fall or experience an accident or an injury. Therefore, chiropractors often ask you think back in your past to try to recall a time when any of these might have happened.

Chiropractors locate these misalignments and correct them with gentle spinal adjustments. After the bone is put back in place and the nerve is no longer under pressure, your body can heal – without the use of drugs!
