Do’s and Don’ts to Boost Your Immune System

Adding probiotics such as yogurt to your diet is one way to improve immune function.

Natural health care starts with a few simple steps to help improve your immune function:

  • DO take probiotics. Probiotics are the good bacteria that go into the digestive system and aid in the digestion of your food. Research has recently linked the strength of the immune system to the quantity of probiotics inside the stomach. Probiotics can be found in capsule form, yogurt, or kefir, which is a cultured milk beverage containing copious amounts of probiotics.
  • DO get enough Vitamin D. More specifically, vitamin D3 plays an important role in our bodies ability to fend off diseases. Researchers believe that the reason more people get sick in the winter is because people stay inside as opposed to being in the sun absorbing vitamin D. The best place to receive vitamin D is by being in the sun. The next best source is through fish such as salmon, mackerel, and tuna.
  • DO get nervous system checked. Your nervous system (brain and spine) controls every cell, tissue, organ, and organ system within your body. The key here is to be sure that your spine is in its proper alignment so it can send out clear signals to the rest of your body. Spinal check-ups can be found by scheduling an appointment with your chiropractor.
  • DON’T subject yourself to sugar. Sugar is what many people know as an anti-nutrient. I am talking about the refined simple sugars that contain no nutrients and, upon entering the body, take nutrients away from the body’s storage to be metabolized into the system. Once these storehouses are depleted, then we have created a mess for our body and our immune system faces a greater challenge in fighting off colds and flus.
  • DON’T get lazy. It seems that once the cold weather arrives, people begin laying around the couch and limiting their levels of exercise. This is unfortunate because exercise is a free and fun way to build up your immune system and fight off colds. During moderate exercise your body circulates immune cells that kill bacteria and viruses.
  • DON’T let stress get to you. The more stress you subject yourself to, the weaker your immune system becomes. When our body is under stress we produce more cortisol, which is a stress hormone that increases blood pressure and blood sugar leading to a weakened immune system. The key here is to practice stress relieving techniques such as meditation, yoga, and any form of exercise.

Dr. Austin Cohen is an Atlanta chiropractor and has been practicing since 2009.

  1. This advice is so good! Simple and true. Thank you for getting this information out!

  2. Great Article! I especially lie #1. Probiotics are very much overlooked in most people’s nutritional regimen and a healthy gut leads to a healthier person.
