Upper Back Pain

Pain in the upper back, while less common than lower back pain, is just as difficult to cope with. With discomfort ranging from mildly annoying to excruciating, it can make working at your computer next to impossible. And forget about sleeping! If you’ve been suffering with upper back pain, your luck is about to change – learn about a drug-free approach to healing back pain and getting back to the things you love.

The Upper Back

The upper back (called the “thoracic spine”) is the portion of your back that relates to the chest area: below the neck, and above the abdomen and lower back. While the neck and lower back are designed to allow movement, twisting and bending, the upper back is designed for stability. Since this area doesn’t have as many moving parts, it’s less susceptible to strain and degenerative conditions like bulging discs.

So what does cause upper back pain? Two primary upper back pain causes are muscle strain and joint dysfunction. Muscle strain typically occurs as a result of unhealthy postures held for extended periods or repetitively performing certain activities and motions. In the case of joint dysfunction, the joints that attach the ribs to the vertebrae can fail to work properly, becoming stiff or immobilized and causing upper back pain.

Stress of one kind or another most often leads to both of these circumstances. Physical stress can be obvious, like stooping over a computer for hours on end. Less obvious but equally to blame is mental/emotional stress like worrying about financial matters or grieving over a loss. This type of stress often results in tensed shoulders and shoulder blades, irritating nerves and causing pain in the upper back. And chemical stress such as eating unhealthy foods or inhaling smog or other toxins can also affect nerve function, resulting in pain.

If you could find a safe, natural method of upper back pain relief, wouldn’t you try it? Well, keep reading!

Upper Back Pain Treatments

The traditional medical approach is to treat all upper back pain the same, regardless of the underlying cause. Since the pain can stem from muscle strain, nervous system irritation or rib joint malfunction, a one-size-fits-all approach to upper back pain treatment would seem to miss the mark. This one-size-fits-all treatment mostly consists of:

  • Pain relievers
  • Physical therapy/exercise
  • Trigger point injections

Pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medications may temporarily reduce pain and inflammation, but they do nothing to heal strained muscles or malfunctioning joints. They wear off after a few hours and the pain returns. Meanwhile, they’re interacting with other medications you may take and creating unwanted side effects!

Moderate exercise is certainly beneficial in helping prevent back pain; however, once the pain is present, that’s a sign that something’s not right. Exercising strained areas puts further stress on the muscles and joints, creating additional nerve irritation and potentially worsening the underlying problem.

Trigger point injections are shots of local anesthetic such as Lidocaine administered directly to areas of acute pain. Like other pain relievers, they simply reduce pain temporarily without addressing the underlying problem.

At your consultation, your chiropractor will start off by asking quite a few questions to get to know you, not just your symptoms. Of course, those are important too, and a thorough examination will help your doctor get a handle on them as well. He or she will give you the rundown on what was discovered, along with a strategy for correcting the problem. Then any areas of misalignment or immobility will be gently adjusted, helping to restore proper alignment, mobility and nerve function. As these corrections are made, the body can begin healing itself.

The Thoracic Spine

THE THORACIC SPINE has a very different function from the neck or lower back. This area of the upper back is designed not for movement, but for stability and protection. It is made up of the twelve thoracic vertebrae, each of which is attached to a rib on both sides. The top nine ribs curve around the body and attach in the front at the sternum. The lower three ribs do not reach all the way to the front, but they still curve around the sides. This structure creates a cage (the thoracic cage or rib cage) that encases the vital organs, protecting them from harm. Because this area of the back allows for little motion, the occurrence of degenerative conditions or bulging discs in the thoracic spine is rare, and upper back pain is typically the result of muscle strain or dysfunction of the rib joints.
