Natural Sciatica Treatments

Traditional sciatica treatment image

Sciatica sufferers abound, with symptoms ranging from mild irritation to excruciating pain in the low back, buttocks and/or legs, and with more missed workdays than any other ailment other than the common cold. If you’re one of the millions looking for sciatica pain relief, you may be at your wit’s end and willing to try just about any sciatica treatment just to put an end to the pain. Fortunately, sciatica relief doesn’t have to involve powerful drugs or invasive procedures – read on to learn about a natural and drug-free approach to treating sciatica.

Sciatica: What Is It? What Causes It?

Sciatica is not a disease or disorder in and of itself. Sciatica is simply the term for a collection of symptoms that occur somewhere along the sciatic nerve pathway.  Some of these symptoms include:

  • Pain
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Weakness
  • Burning or electrical sensation
  • Difficulty walking

The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back, through the buttocks and down the backs of the legs, so symptoms may be present in one or more of these areas, though they are generally more pronounced on one side than the other.

The immediate cause of sciatica is irritation or inflammation of the sciatic nerve. However, the cause of that irritation or inflammation can be any number of things: spinal degeneration or decay, bulging or herniated discs and bone spurs can all affect the nerves from the lower back into the legs either by restricting the space within the nerve pathways or by putting pressure directly on the nerve roots themselves.

And, digging a little deeper, we find that the causes of the spine and disc problems that result in sciatica often originate with things like poor posture, overweight, lack of muscle tone and general neglect of the spine, often for a lifetime. Then, after years of the body automatically adapting to accommodate these stressors, something happens and the body isn’t able to adapt anymore. Often it’s something as simple as bending over to tie your shoes or swinging your feet out of bed in the morning.

Sciatica Treatment

Traditional treatments for sciatica often start with over-the-counter or prescription pain relievers, continuing on to include prescription muscle relaxants, anti-depressants, anti-convulsants and even narcotic pain relievers. Often steroids are injected directly into the epidural space of the spine. Sometimes physical therapy or sciatica exercises are recommended. Other times surgery is. Fortunately, there is another sciatica treatment option available, and it’s one with no risks or side effects!

Aside from the inherent side effects and risks associated with drugs and invasive procedures, none of the traditional sciatica treatment options address the underlying cause of your painful sciatica symptoms. These treatments for sciatica offer temporary relief of symptoms… along with the unpleasant trade-offs of side effects, drug interactions, risks associated with any invasive procedures and/or permanent removal of bone and tissue. Exercises for sciatica and physical therapy increase your tolerance to pain by strengthening nearby muscle groups, but the additional stress these activities place on the spine can actually increase structural instability while doing nothing to correct the underlying problem.

“On the other hand, chiropractic starts with the underlying problem, ” observes a successful chiropractor in Cedar Rapids, IA. “After helping millions of sciatica sufferers just like you find relief from their sciatica pain, it’s safe to say that chiropractors understand sciatica!”

All of our sponsors have had excellent results with sciatica – why not contact one near your home or office today? What you can expect is to be greeted by a warm, compassionate, highly educated health care provider who understands that every patient is unique. To find out what’s going on in your body, your chiropractor will take the time to ask you many questions about what you’re experiencing. Then he or she will conduct a thorough examination.

If chiropractic is not a suitable sciatica treatment option for you for any reason, the doctor will let you know and will recommend an alternative. If you and chiropractic are a good fit, a plan of action will be designed and laid out for you, and your doctor will answer any questions that arise. Delivering precise, safe and gentle adjustments to any areas of misalignment is the next step.

Many people find sciatica relief after just a few appointments, while others learn that the underlying degeneration or decay in their spines requires regular chiropractic adjustments to keep their sciatica symptoms at a minimum. Everyone is different, and of course specific results cannot be guaranteed. But chiropractic wouldn’t be the world’s most sought-after alternative health modality if it didn’t get results!

And you can rest assured that chiropractic is safe: chiropractors hold advanced degrees, continually add to and improve their education, meet licensing requirements in their state and enjoy federal recognition. And most insurance providers offer coverage for chiropractic care.

WHAT THE SCIATIC NERVE IS? The sciatic nerve – the longest nerve in the body – runs from the lower back all the way to the feet, with many other nerve bundles branching off of it along the way.
WHAT CAUSES SCIATICA? People often mistakenly believe that only traumas such as blows to the spine or car accidents result in sciatica. Actually, it’s far more common for the problem to be the cumulative effects of incorrect posture, lack of core muscle strength and dangerous lifting and twisting techniques.
IF BED REST IS GOOD FOR SCIATICA? Although it’s counter-intuitive, resting the back is NOT good for sciatica. Bed rest and long periods of sitting can worsen your sciatica symptoms. Prolonged driving or standing also increase pain. Maintaining a moderate activity level is best.
IF DRUGS CURE SCIATICA? Drugs, whether prescription or OTC, do not cure sciatica; they simply mask the problem by temporarily relieving pain. Of course, the numbing effects of the drugs do not directly target your lower back or legs, but are felt throughout all the structures and organs of the body – including your brain. It’s also easy to further injure your spine since you can’t feel how a particular action or motion will affect you.
